Vendôme, the garden-city of the Loir Valley

Vendôme is crossed by the Loir and is a town offering a fine blend of culture and nature. Follow one of the three walks through the town: two of them will guide you around some of the historic monuments, while the other will take you on a tour of its ten green gardens.

Vendôme, at the heart of the Loir valley

A "Ville  d’art  et  d’histoire" ("Town of art and history"),  Vendôme is home to numerous historic buildings and the remains of the ancient walls that used to surround the town, including the Saint-Georges gate.

Discover this rich heritage thanks to two city trails by following the little golden studs in the ground from monument to monument, each of which is described on explanatory panels.

The first trail, "Au  coeur  de  la  ville" ("In the heart of town" – 1.5 hours) will take you to some of the beautiful medieval houses and their pitched roofs.

It will also lead you to another unmissable monument: the
abbey church of la Trinité with its flamboyant Gothic facade and Romanesque bell tower standing eighty metres tall. Inside you can admire the mural paintings in the chapter house and the stained glass window of the Virgin and Child.

Near the Loir you will come to the imposing Islette tower, which dates back to the 13th century.

The second trail, called "Flânerie vers le château" ("Strolling to the castle" – 1 hour) invites you to discover religious buildings (Sainte-Marie-Madeleine church, the chapel of Saint-Pierre-la-Motte, the former church of Saint-Martin) and the Baltard-style covered market and the gates of Pont neuf and Saint-Georges.

The highlight of this visit is the wonderful view of Vendôme from the top of the ruined castle once belonging to the counts and dukes of Vendôme.

Vendôme is moreover crossed by the St James's Way, which also passes through Tours and Chartres.

Vendôme, garden-city

For centuries, Vendôme has enjoyed a pleasant natural heritage alongside its cultural legacy. The town is keen to preserve its 100 hectares of green space and has resolved not to make use of pesticides".

It is wholly logical, therefore, that Vendôme should offer a trail devoted to the gardens: "Vendôme, ville jardin" ("Vendôme, garden-city").

On the banks of the Loir, the sloping terraces of the little gardens contain different floral compositions every year, as do Square Belot and the courtyard of the library. The cloister, on the other hand, contains a small garden dedicated to fragrances.

Parc Ronsard and the grounds of the château are both perfect places for a pleasant stroll in the midst of century-old trees (plane trees, cedars etc.)
