THE PARK AND GARDENS OF THE CHÂTEAU OF VALMER: ITALIAN CHARM

In the heart of the Vouvray wine region, the gardens of the Château of Valmer are composed of eight Italian terraces on eight different levels containing remarkable Renaissance gardens. Balustrades, statues, columns, stairs and fountains create a setting typical of Italian Renaissance villas. The High Terrace, which overlooks the moat, boasts a stunning panoramic view of the gardens.

During the visit, you will discover a succession of different atmospheres: the Terrace of the Florentine Fountains is an explosion of colour that changes as different flowers come into bloom, in the Terrace of the Anduze Vases, Mediterranean notes of rosemary fill the air, while in Leda’s Terrace it is the scent of lavender that predominates.

Leda’s Terrace is also home to a large, clipped yew tree that conceals an intriguing 15th-century double staircase leading to the moat. It is a unique place, cool but sunny, where the scents of the plants are magnified.

THE MOUTH-WATERING PARK AND GARDENS OF THE CHÂTEAU OF VALMER

Alix de Saint Venant has been cultivating heirloom and modern vegetables, edible flowers and a collection of Loire Valley grapes in his kitchen garden for nearly 15 years. At Valmer, the aim is to test, taste and enjoy home-grown produce, such as the strange “oyster plant” whose leaves taste strongly of oysters!
