THE PARK AND GARDENS OF THE CHÂTEAU OF CHAMEROLLES: THE RENAISSANCE SPIRIT

The former residence of the Du Lac family, the Château of Chamerolles was built between 1500 and 1530 by Lancelot du Lac, Chamberlain to King Louis XII, on the site of an old medieval fortress of which the moat and corner towers still stand. This typical Renaissance château, with its decorative brickwork and gallery, is flanked by colourful gardens and a water mirror.

The elegance of the gardens echoes that of the Renaissance château, which houses a remarkable collection of precious objects and bottles related to the history of perfume. Composed of six parterres, the garden of the Château of Chamerolles has remained faithful to its original function: it is simultaneously a utilitarian, pleasure and formal garden. The benches in the Pré Haut garden are perfect for a moment’s daydreaming or meditation. The parterre of broderie composed of diamond-shaped beds features geometric shapes with cordon box trees growing around an obelisk. The scent of thyme wafts through the air, bringing a hint of the Mediterranean atmosphere. The yew maze is a fun place for exploring as you try to find your way out. The two kitchen garden beds are a reminder of the garden’s utilitarian purpose. They provide the fruit, vegetables and herbs necessary for cooking meals and testify to their importance in the life of the château and its residents.

A TOUCH OF ROMANTICISM AT CHAMEROLLES…

Bordered by woody and flowering shrubs, the alleys of the park lead to a pretty kiosk on the edge of the water mirror. Take a seat to rest awhile and admire the château.
