THE PARK AND GARDENS OF THE CHÂTEAU OF LA BUSSIÈRE: MIND-BLOWING AND MOUTH-WATERING

The red-brick reflection of the Château of La Bussière dances on the surface of the lake below. Next to it lies the vast 60-hectare park designed by Le Nôtre in the 17th century and, just nearby, the 1.5-hectare kitchen garden, whose square beds are laid out according to the original 18th-century plans. It is fully walled and offers mouth-watering discoveries!

IN THE KITCHEN GARDEN, THERE’S PLENTY TO WHET YOUR APPETITE!

The square beds of the La Bussière kitchen garden lie on either side of a path lined with roses and trained fruit trees. Fruits, flowers, aromatic plants and heirloom vegetables grow side by side in a harmonious blend.

Among the fruit trees, some of the pear and apple trees have rather unusual names, such as “Cuisse madame” (lady’s thigh), “Sucrée de Gien” (Gien sweet) and “Sept en gueule” (seven in the mouth). In summer, the orchard yields a wide range of red fruit including blackcurrants, redcurrants, raspberries and jostaberries. There’s plenty to see and taste, because visitors are allowed to pick them! Fill one of the tubs provided. These berries make delicious desserts!

Here, the gardeners prioritise heirloom vegetables and cultivate a range of varieties such as chard, rutabaga and kohlrabi. There are also beds of aromatic and medicinal plants.

Natural gardening techniques are used extensively in this kitchen garden. The gardeners use companion plants to ward off unwanted insects and attract others, a sustainable technique based on the principles of permaculture and in total harmony with nature. Don’t hesitate to pick up a few of the gardeners’ tricks while you’re here!

For a more relaxing experience, take the sylvotherapy trail, which will give you the keys to connect with the trees using your senses.
