Christmas in and around the Royal City of Blois

As they do each year, the great châteaux of Chambord, Cheverny, Chaumont-sur-Loire and Blois will be dressing to the hilt in honour of the holiday season. And for the first time ever, even the animals will be getting into the act! The celebrated ZooParc de Beauval in St Aignan, 45 min from Blois and one the world’s top 10 zoos, will be joining their ranks, donning its best and adding to the Christmas cheer.

The Domaine National de Chambord, King Francis I’s favourite haunt, will be going all out to make your Christmas a truly enchanting experience. Over 40 majestic fir trees will be lighting up the alleys of the splendid Renaissance château. The fabulous parade will continue indoors where, this year, you’ll get to choose from among the 20 Christmas trees decorated by top luxury brands and cast your vote for the winner!

The Château de Chaumont-sur-Loire, widely considered one of the most beautiful in the Loire Valley, is another absolute must. So come and enjoy the colourful lights and sumptuous decorations it will show off this holiday season. And don’t miss the château’s famous ‘jardins d’hiver’.

The family-owned Château de Cheverny will be getting into the action as well. Its exquisitely furnished rooms will be beautifully decorated, with the spotlight focussed on a gigantic Christmas tree and wreath. Don’t miss the gardens and the illuminations of its splendid façade come dusk.

Last but not least, the Château Royal de Blois, perched majestically above the town and overlooking the Loire, will be putting on a terrific show this Christmas with a festive, scintillating, quirky, off-beat and totally captivating programme of events.

On the agenda: an exceptional Playmobil® exhibition for the young at heart, and a night tour to probe the château’s deep, dark secrets. You’ll also get to see its remarkable ‘Sound and Light’ show, a vivid recounting of some of the chilling dramas and intrigues that took place there and shaped the history of France. So get ready for a royal celebration worthy of a château that has been the home of 7 kings and 10 queens of France!
Other holiday treats:
The annual Winter Festival in Blois, with its carnival of events, animated cobblestoned streets and famous ‘Marché de Noel’, for some great ideas for gifts.
The many other smaller châteaux within easy reach of Blois, such as Talcy, Fougères-sur-Bièvre, and the charming little town of Vendôme, well worth a detour.
And for our foodies: L’Atelier St Michel, a family-owned biscuit factory in Contres, 5 min from Cheverny, and Max Vauché’s famous Chocolate Factory at Bracieux, between Chambord and Cheverny: gourmet ‘specials’ to sample onsite or pack up and bring home.
