Not to be missed: Fairy-tale gardens

The gardens at Le Rivau are brimming with imagination, inspired by the most unusual tales and legends. Nature blends with contemporary art to create 14 fairy-tale scenes telling fabulous stories where young and old alike will be immersed in a magical adventure.

Walking through the gardens of Le Rivau is like diving into a magical world, like a certain young girl lost in wonderland! Over six hectares, the gardens bring to life the most famous legends through 14 fairy-tale scenes. Follow in the footsteps of elves, fairies and other fantastical creatures, from giant vegetables in Gargantua’s vegetable patch to the iron dragon in the enchanted forest and characters from Lewis Carroll’s tales in the Alice in Rivau-land labyrinth, all offering botanical gardens, games and artistic works. Pieces of contemporary art are scattered throughout the grounds in the form of monumental sculptures… imagine that Puss in Boots has lost his seven-league boots or that a horse has escaped from enchanted stables!

The gardens are listed as a Remarkable Garden of France by the French Ministry of Culture, and the château’s plants are managed according to sustainable development principles. Composting, restricted use of pesticides, manual weeding and bulb recycling all demonstrate the environmental focus at Le Rivau. The gardeners work to maintain the botanical features within the castle’s gardens with great respect for the environment.
