The royal city of Loches: the history of a military masterpiece

A masterpiece of military architecture and the home of Renaissance ballets, the Royal City of Loches is one of the most impressive monuments in the Loire Valley. Built in an exceptional position on a rocky spur and surrounded by a long wall, the Royal City of Loches is composed of two main buildings: the Royal Lodge and the Keep, which was built by Fulk the Black, Count of Anjou. Their construction began in the 11th century and work continued over the following centuries with the gradual addition of improved defences, towers, arrowslits and machicolations. The Keep was turned into a state prison under Louis XI and still bears the marks of those who were imprisoned there. At 37m tall, it is the one of the best-preserved Romanesque keeps today. Many historic figures have stayed in or visited the Royal City of Loches.

It was in this Lodge that Joan of Arc met with the future King Charles VII and persuaded him to be crowned in Reims. The new king also used it as a retreat for his love affairs with the beautiful Agnès Sorel. In the 15th century, the Lodge was extended by Charles VIII and then Louis XII, who between them added a second lodge of which the style already heralded that of the Renaissance. The two kings were both married to the same queen, Anne of Brittany, who also left her mark on the City with the construction of an oratory in the flamboyant Gothic style. All these buildings are open to visit. Enter through the Royal Gate and cross the Medieval Gardens to explore them and relive the sagas of more than one thousand years of history!
