Hidden treasure: The Conservatory of Fragrant Roses

There is something remarkable about the rose collection at the Château of Le Rivau: all of the flowers have been specially selected for the quality of their scent. From May onwards, the Conservatory of Fragrant Roses fills the gardens with the fragrance of 450 rose varieties, each with their own unique scent.
The Château of Le Rivau rosery is like no other, because all the roses here have been specially chosen for their fragrances. This unique selection has led to the creation of a one-of-a-kind conservatory dedicated to fragrant roses. The gardens boast a collection of 450 rose varieties listed by the CCVA (Conservatory for Specialist Plant Collections).
From May onwards they are a veritable feast for the senses, allowing visitors to discover the subtleties of each flower’s delicate perfume. Visitors will be captivated by the scent of tea and myrrh from The Pilgrim, notes of white wine from Jude the Obscure, the musky perfume of Queen of Sweden and the fruity notes of Lady Emma Hamilton. The famous rose grower André Ève even created a new rose specially for the estate and named it ‘Château du Rivau’ in the château’s honour. A creeper of white roses with golden stamen now adorns the ancient ramparts, giving off a delicate scent of green apple. Every year, the Journées de la Rose (Rose Days) are celebrated here, with romantic trails and creative workshops… A real paradise for rose lovers!
