A woman’s story
The spirit of George Sand fills this Nohant estate that the novelist was so fond of. It was her grandmother who transmitted to her a passion for this house in the heart of the Black Valley. Today, the gardens of the Estate of George Sand reflect the identity of their former owner: poetic, bucolic and faithful to the memory of the garden of her childhood.
An immersion in Romanticism
Beds of elegant roses surround the beautiful manor house, benches in the garden are the perfect place to stop and dream, a long alley planted with perennials separates the Orchard from the Vegetable Garden and, a little further on, the walk through the wood leads to a small pond. In autumn, the woodland floor is covered with a carpet of colourful cyclamens. These are the gardens in which the novelist liked to stroll or spend time gardening and studying botany.
The gardens of the Estate of George Sand are imbued with a romantic atmosphere. The Rose Garden, the Flower Garden, the Wild Alleys, the Woodland Walk, etc., all transport couples to a different century.
Music in summer
Every summer during the Nohant festival, the Shepherd’s Barn at the Estate of George Sand is filled with the sound of music from the Romantic period. The figure of Chopin, who composed some of his finest works here, immediately springs to mind. Visitors can attend concerts and literary discussions while musical notes drift through the air to the gardens…
Inspired by vegetables
The estate’s Vegetable Garden is designed to show the important role it played in the past. Once much larger, it used to produce vegetables for the Sand family and the many guests they received. The novelist herself even liked to cook delicious food for her friends and family!
