It’s decided, you’re bringing your family on an unforgettable day out in the Loire Valley! There are so many things to see and do here, with a vast range of family friendly outings and activities. The most difficult part is to choose between them… The stunning Château de Chambord: explore the grounds by bike or go for a boat trip around the base? The Montbazon Fortress: journey back to the Middle Ages by taking part in the workshops or watching the shows? Have some fun with the children at the Family Park? The Haute-Touche Reserve to see the animals up close? Nature or culture? We’ve got three ideas for outings here for you, but don’t forget that the main thing is to spend time together and have fun, whatever you choose to do!

An action-packed day at the Domaine National de Chambord

Léonard de Serres – Domaine National de Chambord

The Loire Valley is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is literally bursting with architectural and natural wonders. One of them is the Château of Chambord which stands out for its sheer size, fascinating history and wide range of activities to do as a family.

The day begins with a tour of the stunning château: Wonder at the unique architecture, including the famous spiral double helix staircase designed by Leonardo da Vinci himself. Children can use the interactive tablets to have some fun as they explore the château and learn about its history, and they’ll enjoy the games and entertainment in the Logis des Enfants children’s area. Then go for a stroll around the French formal garden and along the shaded paths, and stop off for lunch or a snack and taste some local treats.

For fans of outdoor activities, there is a wide range of possibilities at the Château. You can hire a bike or a Rosalie (quadricycle) and explore the 32 kilometres of cycle paths in the surrounding area (15 km within the castle grounds), that are perfect for a family bike ride, and look out for local wildlife such as deer, wild boar and so many wild birds. Marked-out cycle routes will guide you through some stunning scenery and past panoramic views of this architectural wonder.

You can also go for a boat trip on the canal. Rowing across the calm waters as you admire the beauty of the estate from another angle is a relaxing, peaceful experience.

This is the ideal place for quality time as a family, as there are plenty of outdoor games and picnic areas dotted throughout the gardens.

To round off this action-packed day, come and watch an equestrian show featuring riders in period clothing, and a falconry show with some stunning birds of prey.

At the Domaine National de Chambord, history, gastronomy and nature come together for an unforgettable family experience guaranteed.

If you begin your visit by walking through the enclosures, you’ll see some superb deer, antelopes and even wolves in semi-captivity. Children will be able to learn about the diversity of species thanks to the explanations on the educational signs.

You’ll also be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of lynx and cheetahs in the cat’s zone. The reserve has a key role to play in safeguarding these species and raising awareness about their protection among visitors. Guided tours are available to learn more about the conservation initiatives, don’t hesitate to sign up and go on a tour as a family.

It is possible to enter the Reserve with your own car. Your vehicle must be closed. Two-wheels (bikes, motorbikes, etc.) and cabriolet vehicles are not authorised on the safari for safety reasons. You can also bring your bike and cycle around the park or hire one there.
