Habituated to flowery areas, foraging or hovering, and often confused with other insects, hoverflies are varied and their study presents multiple interests. Supervised by Jocelyne Claude and Thomas Lebard, independent entomologists.
In Europe, 875 species of this family of Diptera have been inventoried, including 560 in France. As larvae, hoverflies use restricted ecological niches and have strict
strict requirements. They are excellent bioindicators. The life traits of over 95% of hoverfly species are known. By searching for and studying adults, it is possible to diagnose the ecological status of a site, in virtually all terrestrial ecosystems. This training course provides an introduction to the main aspects of the study of syrphid Diptera, with the emphasis on general notions and identification.
