Chinon, Cheverny and Montlouis sur Loire, vineyard gems
While the Loire Valley vineyards are famous, so are its cities, as evidenced by Chinon, Cheverny and Montlouis-sur-Loire. These marvels of architecture and gastronomy are just waiting to be discovered for an oenological holiday.
Surrounded by vineyards and nestling in a remarkable site, Chinon is a proud Medieval city. From the top of its royal fortress there is a breathtaking view of the city, the Vienne and flourishing vineyards.
The wines of Chinon are ruby red and are produced from grapes grown on the hillsides overlooking the Loire and Vienne.
With its cobbled streets, typical half-timbered houses and grand town houses, the city offers plenty of opportunities to try a glass of Chinon wine on a terrace, or in a tourist cellar or inn.
Don't miss the weekend in April when winemakers fill the streets of Chinon...
Come and visit Cheverny. The large forest estate is also home to the Château of Cheverny, which inspired Hergé when he came to draw Marlinspike Hall in Tintin.
Cheverny has also given its name to its vineyards, whose red, rosé and white wines can be discovered at the Maison des Vins at the entrance to the château.
Further on you can visit the Château of Troussay, the smallest of the Loire châteaux. Its museum of ancient objects from Sologne and the centuries-old trees in the park are definitely worth the visit.
Between Tours and Amboise you will find Montlouis-sur-Loire, which is famous for its AOC wines. Whether on foot or via the Loire à Vélo bicycle trail running through the village, take time to see the vineyards and hills, together with the Château of La Bourdaisière and its conservatory of tomatoes, park and gardens.
