Take the ‘Slow Boat’ to Travel through the Loire Valley

Let yourself drift with the current and be carried away by the Loire Valley’s fabulous landscapes: not a bad idea for a holiday! As soon as you set foot on the boat, you’ll be swept up by a sense of peace and wellbeing: the magic sound of the gently lapping waves will soothe your soul and gladden your heart!

The Loire and its offshoots, the Cher and the Vienne, offer plenty of opportunities a ‘total immersion’ in the natural wonders of this unique region, proud holder of the coveted title ‘UNESCO World Heritage Site’. You can hop on board a boat almost anywhere along the riverbanks in Touraine, whether it’s Chenonceaux, Amboise, Tours, Langeais or Chinon.

Most of the tours are on ‘toues’, the traditional flat-bottomed boats that have plied the Loire’s rivers for generations, but modernized and updated so you can travel in comfort. The skilled sailors who serve as your guides will fill you in on the many secrets of the local wildlife and the history of the rivers as you glide along.

There are many different options available: hour-long initiation tours, longer trips where can lunch on board or stop on a sandbank for a picnic; trips at dawn or in the peaceful silence of dusk, as you watch the sunset, a glass of local ‘crémant’ in hand. And if you want to go all out, you can even spend a night on board, alone under the bright starry sky and rocked to sleep by the gently shifting tides: a super-cool experience and so very romantic!

Two possibilities: L’Amarante, moored on the waterfront in the historic hillside village of Montsoreau, 45 min. east of Tours, where the Loire and the Vienne rivers meet. You’ll pass another charming village, Candes-Saint-Martin, and then drop anchor to spend a quiet evening and peaceful night en tête-à-tête. In the morning, you’ll be greeted by the boatmen returning with breakfast and ready to ferry you back to your starting point. Check out the video to see what’s awaiting you!

La Toue Charme: a traditional riverboat and totally green ‘floating home’ with all modern conveniences, plus terrace and spa, for a night to remember! Anchored at La Chapelle-aux-Naux, a former fishing village and port, about 8 km from Azay-le-Rideau, with easy access from Tours via the ‘Loire à Vélo cycling route (40 km).

Both these companies – and the many others - offer a wide variety of river tours. So take your pick. Whatever you choose, we guarantee you won’t regret it. You’ll give your trip a refreshing new spin and see the region in wholly different light.
