The Route Jacques Coeur was born in 1954 on the initiative of the owners of the castles of Ainay-le-Vieil and Meillant. Initially called the "Circuit of the Castles of the Heart of France", the oldest Historical Route in France offered visits as well as night-time discoveries and illuminations on their sites, the tone was set. Half a century later, the number of members has multiplied and the Route now counts 18: Castles of Gien, La Verrerie, Menetou-Salon, La Chapelle-d'Angillon, Sagonne, Pesselières, Mehun-sur-Yèvre, Meillant, Ainay-le-Vieil and Peufeilhoux, the Cities of Sancerre, Bourges, Aubigny-sur-Nère, Argent-sur-Sauldre, Dun-sur-Auron, Mehun-sur-Yèvre, Saint-Amand-Montrond, and the sites of the Abbey of Noirlac and the Palais Jacques Coeur.
