Description
The practice of erecting calvaries and crosses, emblems of Christianity, at village entrances or crossroads, was very common in territories that had belonged to Benedictine abbeys. Most of these modest monuments on the main roads were erected to commemorate an event: accidental death, the departure or return of a pilgrim, a mission, a sign of expiation or protection, or simply to mark the territory of a parish. Thanks to Abbé Debourges, the 17 calvaries in La Berthenoux were restored in 1977 (the year in which the Abbé celebrated his 25th anniversary in the village). Explore the Berthenoux countryside in search of these edifices.
