Accueil Théâtre gallo-romain du Virou
The commune of Saint-Marcel, in the Indre department, is home to the remains of the Gallo-Roman city of Argentomagus. To the east, the Virou site on the Douces plateau is an emblematic site, with the superimposition of two ancient theaters built and used successively in the 1st and 2nd centuries.
Description
The remains of these entertainment facilities bear witness to the city?s intense activity and enrichment. Gradually abandoned during the 3rd century, the site was abandoned in the 4th century, corresponding to the decline of the Roman Empire? before being rediscovered in the 19th century. Owned by the French State and assigned to the Ministry of Culture, the Virou site is freely accessible to the public and is part of the Argentomagus Museum?s visitor itinerary ©Source: Ministère de la Culture.
