Description
Tavant's architecture and Romanesque frescoes make it one of the most interesting churches in France. The construction is well-proportioned, with remarkable capitals with depictions of griffins and sirens. The choir is decorated with frescoes recounting the childhood of Christ, as well as a Christ in Majesty framed by a cortège of very elegant angels. The church of Tavant is above all renowned for the vibrant style of the paintings in its crypt, and the rarity of some of the themes covered. Amongst the most remarkable scenes are David with his harp, and a woman piercing her breasts with a lance as two snakes bite them, a symbol of luxury and excess.
