Accueil Église Saint Martin de Prissac
The church is remarkable for its bell tower from the end of the 12th century and for its wall paintings.
Description
The church of Prissac was that of a priory of the Benedictine abbey of St Savin (Vienne). It is dedicated to Saint Martin, bishop of Tours, who evangelized the center and west of Gaul in the 4th century
The bell tower, the oldest part, was built at the end of the 12th century and is the entrance porch of the church. The double nave dates from the end of the 15th century, or even the beginning of the 16th century
Two bells date from 1913, the third from 1555. It is contemporary with the rest of the building. Named Mary, its dedication invites to calm the anger of God and to keep away lightning and storms
The paintings that adorn the vaults are probably from the end of the 19th century, they are almost identical to the 16th century painted decor that they cover.
