Accueil Eglise Saint-Etienne de Paulnay
Poitevin Romanesque-style church, remarkable for the sculpture of its facade.
Description
Built in the 12th century in the purest Romanesque poitevin style, it is remarkable for its magnificent facade adorned with sculptures (plant motifs, mermaids – a rare detail in Berry – and birds intertwine around the entrance gate) as well as its frescoes which are striking by their intense colour (Christ Enthroned, calendar of months, representation of hell). The Paulnay site dates back to an earlier period in the Middle Ages, indeed during excavations, the foundations of a Gallo-Roman temple were discovered as well as burials, the oldest dating back to the Merovingian period, as evidenced by the two sarcophagi shown on the forecourt.
