Accueil Eglise abbatiale Sainte-Marie
Despite the destruction of its nave in the 17th century, the Saint-Genou church remains one of the purest Romanesque architecture monuments in Berry.
Description
It consists of a partially preserved transept, built on the model of the one in St. Martin, Tours, a right choir with a splendid colonnade, adorned with capitals, some telling stories, finished by a circular apse hosting the tomb of Saint-Genou under the modern altar, whose funerary stone was preserved with its dedicatory inscription. The magnificence of Saint-Genou lies in the quality of its sculpture, both inside and out, that it elegantly embroiders with alluring variations on an acanthus theme, or that it applies to a bestiary of birds and especially lions. Among the masterpieces adorning the colonnade, we can note (north side) Daniel in the lions' den, with on the reverse the Adoration of the Magi.
