Description
Sagonne, a site of Gallo-Roman origin, has accommodated some famous people over the centuries: the Constable of Sancerre, the d’Amboise dynasty, Gabrielle d'Estrées, Mansart, etc. Surrounded by a moat with flowing water, the compound, reinforced with towers, retains its defence mechanisms. At its centre stands an enormous keep containing vast halls. In one of these, a precious 14th-century fresco has been preserved. The neighbouring chapel is painted in trompe l'oeil, with a decor reminiscent of the Grand Trianon. Old weapons, tapestries, portraits and historical documents adorn the château rooms. Some arrangements still remain from the great park created by Mansart to welcome Louis XIV.
