About the monument :
Sainte-Sévère-sur-Indre is home to two castles that tell the story of local history. On the feudal motte, the remains of the 15th-century medieval castle bear witness to the time when this fortress dominated the region. Below, an elegant château was built in 1770 in a classical style, embodying the refinement of the 18th century. The château underwent major alterations in the 19th century under the direction of architect Alfred Dauvergne, who modernized and embellished the building while respecting its original character. The château also inspired Georges Sand to write her novel Mauprat, in which she blends history and fiction in an intrigue imbued with romanticism. These two complementary buildings offer a unique insight into the village's architectural and historical evolution. The groun
