Visite La vie d'une abbaye hors les murs
The Sunday 07 September at 10 a.m30
18200 BRUERE-ALLICHAMPS
In the Middle Ages, Cistercian monks made a point of enclosure. But there was also a whole life that was indispensable to the abbey outside this enclosure, or just on the edge of it, where the lay brothers played a major role.
In theory, monks do not leave the monastic enclosure, and no non-religious are allowed to enter. However, the abbey's life outside the enclosure was indispensable, and the lay brothers played a major role.
From the 13th to the 18th century, the abbey owned some 3,000 hectares of land: woods, pastures, vineyards, fishing grounds, mills, etc. This tour invites you to discover this outside life.
