Journée européenne du Patrimoine – Eglise Saint Denis

Presentation

Dating back to the end of the 11th century, the church of Condé is a sight to behold as soon as you arrive. Inside, the walls reveal frescoes including a 16th-century danse macabre. The crypt is accessible via two side corridors beneath the raised choir. Guided tour by appointment
Dependent on the abbey of Massay and then on the cathedral chapter under the Ancien Régime, this former parish church was abandoned in 1844 when the commune of Condé-sur-Arnon merged with the neighbouring La Celle. Built on a rectangular plan and with a flat chevet, the church has a carefully arranged construction which seems to date from the end of the 11th century. The façade, supported by two buttresses, has a single window and a portal without a tympanum, flanked by columns. The transom extends into a frieze on both sides. Inside, the nave is covered with a recently restored panelled barrel vault. The walls show several frescoes. On the north wall, there is a danse macabre which may date from the 16th century.
