In the Middle Ages, the French king and his entourage rarely spent more than a few weeks in one place. Motivated by political, military or religious necessity, or by pleasures such as hunting, the court's mobility meant that it criss-crossed the kingdom.

Travelling was an integral part of the sovereign's life. The exhibition "Le roi voyageur" (The King as Traveler) explores the meaning and implications of itinerancy at the French court from the 12th century to the end of the Middle Ages.
