In 2025, the Musée de la Vallée de la Creuse is devoting an exhibition to the artist Armand Guillaumin (1841-1927), a French painter renowned for his key role in the Impressionist movement.
Born in Paris, he began his career as a laborer, while taking drawing classes in the evenings. A close friend of figures such as Camille Pissarro and Paul Cézanne, he began exhibiting with the Impressionists in 1874. His work is characterized by vibrant landscapes, marked by intense colors and brilliant light. Inspired by nature, he painted the banks of the Seine, Creuse and the Berry region, where he later settled. Guillaumin is also associated with Fauvism, because of his bold palettes.
Nearly 400 artists set up their easels on the banks of the Creuse, drawn by its raw landscapes and sublime contrasts. From the 19th century onwards, this valley was a favorite destination for Impressionist painters, who immortalized these landscapes for almost a century.
