Grand-Lieu Lake, a vast bird reserve

Situated approximately 14 km from Nantes, the Réserve naturelle de Grand-Lieu (Grand-Lieu nature reserve) notably contains one of the largest natural lakes in France. A vast wetland area covered with reeds, Lac de Grand-Lieu (Grand-Lieu Lake) is home to large bird colonies just waiting for you to discover them as you travel around the site, or from the top of a viewpoint or on a guided tour by the Maison du Lac.

Grand-Lieu Lake: an ornithological reserve

Grand-Lieu Lake is without a doubt a heavenly location for birds, and especially grey herons; there are 800 couples of this species living here in huge colonies! Alongside them are also geese, ducks, otters, common frogs and over 500 plant species.

To observe this range of wildlife, set out along the 72-km path by bike, on foot or on horeseback.

On the edge of the lake you will occasionally meet the few local residents authorised to fish here. In these shallow waters they have kept the traditional technique of seine fishing (using a net), a method which is celebrated duting the "Fête du Lac" on 15 August.

To fully appreciate the full expanse of this major wetland area, climb to the top of the bell tower of the church of Sainte-Lumine-de-Coutais, which is 40 metres tall, or the  Pierre-Aïgue observatory in Saint-Aignan-Grand-Lieu.
