The Layon Valley

Nestling in the famously pleasant Anjou landscape, the Layon Valley boasts a large wine-growing district covering 1500 hectares, where Coteaux du Layon, Cabernet d'Anjou and Crémants de Loire grow, well established in a land crossed by the river Layon. Come and enjoy a wine tourism trip and experience the fascinating history of this valley, which is rightly listed as a Vignobles & Découvertes ('Vineyards & Discoveries') location.

This is one of the eight "Vignobles & Découvertes" destinations in the Loire Valley offering a selection of wineries open to visitors for tastings and special visits, accommodation, restaurants offering fine food and wine, visits to cultural sites and events associated with the local wine and heritage.

The Layon valley: vineyards nestling in pleasant Anjou scenery

Crossed by the river Layon, a tributary of the Loire, the Layon valley lends itself charmingly to wine tourism.
Damp in the early morning and later warmed by the afternoon sun, the region offers very special climate conditions for its vineyards, so special that they give rise to the Botrytis cinerea fungus, the "noble rot" at the origin of fine sweet white wines like the Coteaux du Layon.

To take full advantage of your visit to this terroir and taste the wines, visit the 15 Tourist Cellars and ten restaurants and accommodation options listed by Vignobles & Découvertes and which are waiting to welcome you.

The wines from the Layon valley, firmly rooted in both the terroir and the minds of its inhabitants, boast a high level of quality. There are no less than 17 appellations here. The sweet syrupy wines are the standard bearers of the Layon Valley: Bonnezeaux, Chaume or Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru, to name but a few.

To round off your oenological journey, don't miss the Musée de la Vigne et du Vin d’Anjou (Museum of the Vine and Wine of Anjou).
