The Château of Chenonceau

The elegant gallery of the Château of Chenonceau straddles the River Cher. Loved, managed and protected by women such as Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de' Medici, the château certainly deserves the nickname "the Ladies' Château".

Chenonceau, the ladies' château

The construction of the Château of Chenonceau started in 1513 and was supervised by Katherine Briçonnet, the wife of an influential statesman and the one who designed its refined appearance. A few years later, Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de' Medici, respectively the favourite and wife of King Henri II, embellished it further. Diane built the bridge over the River Cher, while Catherine de' Medici added the splendid galleries on top of it. Two centuries later, it was another woman, Madame Dupin, who saved the château from the turmoil of the Revolution.
The mark of these extraordinary women is evident everywhere in the Château of Chenonceau. Marking a high point in Renaissance architecture, it stands out for its exceptional appearance and outstanding collection of Old Master paintings and remarkable series of Flemish 16th-century tapestries.

Gardens and flowers

Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de' Medici both had gardens named after them in the Château of Chenonceau. Perfect for strolling around and relaxing in, the two gardens boast a multitude of shrubs, rows of orange trees, climbing roses and flowers that will delight visitors with their different scents. In fine weather, exceptional evenings are the perfect opportunity for a night-time walk in the gardens, amidst light and shadows and accompanied by music by Arcangelo Corelli.
Next to the Château you will discover the flower studio, where the splendid bouquets are prepared for adorning the rooms of the château. The team of florists in this workshop, the only one of its kind in France, use the flowers grown in a specially dedicated garden called the "Potager des Fleurs" (the Flower Garden). At the end of the year, for the "Noël à Chenonceau" ("Christmas at Chenonceau") event, the estate's florists offer a new take on tradition with exceptional creations that add a real fairy-tale touch to this magical site!
