TOP 5 WALKS IN LOIRE-ATLANTIQUE

Loire-Atlantique is full of beautiful walks through diverse landscapes including woods, forest, coastline and rivers. Here are our top 5 ideas for outings with family or friends!

A taste of Italy in Clisson

No need to travel a long way for a change of scenery! Take a walk through the streets of Clisson and you’ll soon smell the scents of Italy... Nestled on the Sèvre Nantaise, this charming town was built on the design of Tuscan cities. Today, it is a delightful setting with a medieval past. You will be charmed by the bridge leading to the medieval part of the town overlooked by the Château, the typical covered market that still comes to life on market days, the building in Garenne Lemot park that hosts contemporary art exhibitions, the walks along the Sèvre Nantaise, the surrounding vineyards... A whole way of life, Italian style!

On the banks of the Erdre

A short distance from the centre of Nantes, the banks of the Erdre are the “green lungs” of the city with the surrounding nature, river and pure air. The “most beautiful river in France", as King Francis I once said, is also an opportunity for outings on Toue boats or trips in canoes, a little closer to the surface of the water!
During your outing you will no doubt spot the ”L'ERDRE: in NORT-SUR-ERDRE, The Loire Valley, a journey through France (loirevalley-france.co.uk)”, manors built in the late 18th century by ship owners who used them as a country residence. A dream for some, a picturesque view for others!

By the sea in Croisic

The charming fishing port of Le Croisic is also home to old houses that testify to the city’s prosperity. Faience, sardines, the first holiday resort in France... This heavenly location is particularly special! Stroll through the streets and discover the town’s architectural heritage and the remains from the time of Louis XV. On the west side of the city, facing the Atlantic, you can discover the wild coast with its unusual villas and fine sandy beaches. Peacefulness, serenity, authenticity... the local landscape offers a stunning sight for visitors from dawn until dusk.

In Bourgneuf bay

La Bernerie-en-Retz, at the mouth of the bay, is a charming and friendly seaside town. As you walk you walk around you will spot fisheries and typical fishing huts that will transport you to another world. A high tide, their fishing nets catch soles and common shrimp from the sea. At low tide, they add a unique aspect to the local scenery with the sun’s rays reflecting off the foreshore. In winter you will take home unique memories of herons, egrets and harriers flying overhead. A note for walkers and romantics: the sea air is good for your health!

In the heart of the Gâvre forest

This national forest covering 4,500 hectares welcomes you for walks surrounded by greenery. According to the season, you can walk with family or friends, go mushroom picking in autumn, be inspired by the seasonal colours for your paintings or even make unexpected encounters with the likes of wallabies, stags, deer and badgers. Amid the flourishing wildlife, walkers are visitors only, but are nonetheless very welcome!
