Christmas In and Around Orléans: A Feast for Your Palates

A number of châteaux in the area around Orléans, bedecked in their Christmas finery, will be greeting you this holiday season with a wide-ranging menu of special events and delightful gourmet treats to add spice to your visit. As the châteaux are within easy reach of one another, you can visit several in one fell swoop.

It’s well worth the tour as they’ll all be buzzing with lights and music, splendidly decorated and illuminated at night. Enjoy carriage rides, carolling, mulled wine and cinnamon buns along with all the other trappings of an authentic French Christmas. Or sit quietly by the fireside and listen to Christmas stories and legends, then try out your French with the Père Noël!

Stop by the private, family-owned Château de la Ferté-Saint-Aubin for a visit by candlelight and a cup of steaming hot chocolate and delicious honey ‘madeleines’ in the château’s kitchens. Test the homemade chocolate Christmas cake at the Château de La Bussière or enjoy hot drinks and ‘brioche’ in the cosy warmth of the Orangery’s huge wood stove.

Check out the new Christmas show at the recently and superbly restored Château de Beaugency. If you have the time, stroll through the narrow, winding streets of this wonderful medieval town, listed as one of ‘France’s Loveliest Détours’, and warm up with a hot drink and tasty snack at one of its charming little cafés or restaurants.
The legendary ‘two-faced’ Château de Meung-sur-Loire on the banks of the Loire will also be rising to the occasion with it own version of Christmas ‘à la française’, including lights, music and a collection of strange animals in an unusual and colourful décor.

And be sure to schedule a stopover in the city of Orléans itself, with its magnificent cathedral, old town and bustling quays. If you come in December you’ll get to visit its famous ‘Marché de Noël. Arm yourself with shopping bags, as you’ll find just about everything you need in the way of gifts in the 60 some gaily-decorated chalets: Christmas ornaments, jewellery, toys, gourmet specialties, as well as special markets for handicrafts and fair trade products, along with music, street shows and the ubiquitous Father Christmas!
