The Château De Marçay: Much More Than a Simple Tip!

Looking for a real treat? Welcome to the Château De Marçay, a meticulously restored 15th century château and 4-star hotel, just 7 km from the Royal City of Chinon. This superb hotel is set in a large landscaped park, complete with vineyards, orchards, truffle grounds and a kitchen garden, and surrounded by farms and horse pastures.

The château has 28 large and quiet rooms spread over three buildings: each individually decorated, overlooking the grounds, the main courtyard, or with a private garden leading directly to the large heated swimming pool. It also has a fine gourmet restaurant, where the chef concocts delicious dishes using local products or the fruit, vegetables, herbs and spices grown directly on the property. You can also get a picnic hamper to enjoy lunch while lolling on the grass.

And what’s more, the Sommelier can arrange for a private wine tasting in the château’s own cellar, where some 12,000 bottles, representing over 500 different varieties of wines, are stored to age. There are tapas on hand so that all this sampling won’t go to your head!

Enjoy hiking and biking in the beautiful countryside but why not explore it on horseback? The château has an equestrian centre that offers training courses, private or group lessons, excursions and even beginners’ pony rides for the younger set.

The Château de Marcay is a great jumping off point to visit a number of intriguing spots: The majestic Royal Fortress of Chinon that towers over the delightful town centre and its half-timbered houses; the 14 fairy-tale gardens of the Château et Jardins du Rivau, listed as one France’s ‘Outstanding Gardens’, only 10 minutes away.

Chinon is a city of wine, with vineyards as far as the eye can see. So be sure to stop at one of the local producers to savour some great AOCs, like the Domaine de Noiré, run by Odile and Jean-Max Manceau, who specialize in organic wines and store their white wines in amphoras, ceramic containers which date back to prehistoric times!
