The Cabiche: Spend a Night under the Stars

Dream of getting away from it all? Spend a night in a real Loire Valley boat, rocked by the murmur of the river as the currents shift softly with the changing tides and the bright, starry skies gaze down from the heavens. The Cabiche, anchored at the port of Saint-Dyé-sur-Loire, near the Château de Chambord and just 15 km from Blois, offers you this rare opportunity. The cabin’s two comfy bedrooms can accommodate up to four people: with its neat little kitchen and solar-heated shower, it’s an environmentally-friendly and totally green ‘floating’ home.

But best of all, the boat has a spacious flower-rimmed deck terrace so you can bask in the sunshine, enjoy the dinner you’ve cooked up, and revel in the view of the Loire during the long summer evening. By day or by night, it’s an unforgettable sight. Next best is that this unusual getaway is very reasonably-priced and even includes breakfast, so you can enjoy your café-crème and croissant and watch the egrets and herons as they fly off across the river’s sandbanks and islands on their morning journey.

The association Marins du Port de Chambord also proposes another intriguing option:
the traditional flat-bottom ferry, which will scoot you across the Loire in just a half hour, but with plenty to see along the way. Great for hikers and especially for cyclists, who can transport their bikes over to left bank and continue their voyage on the Loire a Vélo’s network of trails.
