The Royal Fortress of Chinon: Charge!

It’s safe to say that the new historic visitor experience at Forteresse Royale de Chinon will bring out the inner-soldier in you! “Charge” reveals the different weapons and techniques used in sieges in the Middle Ages, told through full-scale re-enactments that visitors can even act out themselves.
Until 12th November, the Royal Fortress of Chinon is transforming into a battleground - an imaginary one of course! The new experience, “Charge”, plunges budding knights into the midst of the great battles of the Middle Ages, revealing the war weapons of days gone by. With war weapons, fire muskets and trebuchet artillery, you’ll be amazed by both the full-scale re-enactments and the cannons weighing over 600 kg, which have been restored especially for the occasion. Visitors will follow the evolution of the defences and methods of attack of the Middle Ages by discovering the different techniques used in sieges from the 12th century up until the artillery revolution of the 15th century.
In line with the history of the site, the exhibition focuses on the siege of 1205 and the powerful war machines that were used during this. In addition to the arms room, visitors can also try their hand at shooting a bricole, a trebuchet or catapult, and then practice their swordsmanship over at the “assailant camp”, designed especially for the younger generations. After all these thrilling adventures, you’ll need to get your strength back at the Fortress’s own tearoom, La Table Ronde, with some excellent food on offer, specialising in regional specialities.
