The Royal City of Loches: the spirit of medieval gardens

At the foot of the ancient keep of the Royal City of Loches, the medieval-style garden unveils the spirit of gardens in the Middle Ages. Covering an area of 700 m², it is laid out in different spaces that are perfect for relaxing.

Composed of eight squares of plants ordered according to the colour of their flowers, this walled garden is home to medicinal plants, dye plants and vegetables and is designed to be informative and thought-provoking. It has been recreated based on medieval illuminations and reveals the three functions of medieval gardens: providing food, treatment and relaxation.

Its squares of aromatic plants bordered by woven chestnut branches, its woven wicker hedges and its pergola all go to make it a haven of greenery within the monument.

Visitors can enjoy strolling along the alleys before discovering the bench at the end of the garden surrounded by flourishing irises, acanthuses and common hollyhocks.
