Shamans at the Château of the Dukes of Brittany

From June until January 2020, the Château of the Dukes of Brittany will be showcasing Amazonian ethnographic heritage through an outstanding exhibition.

The exhibition, called “Amazonia, the shaman and the thoughts of the forest” will reveal shamanism and the animist thinking of American Indians. Visitors will discover fifteen or so ethnic groups through their dress, weapons, musical instruments and objects used to establish a connection between the earthly and spiritual worlds. These fabulous collections, which belong to the Ethnographic Museum of Geneva, will be further enhanced by a section on the pre-Columbus history of the Amazon rainforest, from its origins to the present day. Using different materials and accounts from the populations concerned, the exhibition will address various issues such as the future of the Indians whose living space - the tropical rainforest - is currently under threat.
