A new major exhibition at the Abbey of Fontevraud
“Madame de Montespan and Gabrielle de Rochechouart. From Versailles to Fontevraud, being a lady in the 17th century”. This is the theme of the major exhibition orchestrated by the Abbey of Fontevraud and on display for the duration of the cultural season.
The Abbey of Fontevraud is shining the spotlight on women in the 17th century through a grand exhibition dedicated in part to Gabrielle de Rochechouart – the famous abbess of Fontevraud – and her sister Madame de Montespan. From spiritual women to royal mistresses, princesses and academics, the task in hand is to reveal the place of women in French society during the reign of Louis XIV. Discover the life, status and recognised or hard-won position of those who were considered the weaker sex in the mindset of the time through paintings, reproductions of prints and publications and various objects. From the private sphere to public light, the exhibition considers the true role played by these women as well as their surprising ingenuity in creating spaces of independence...
