The Saint-Martial prior, a dependency of the great Saint-Martial Abbey in Limoges, is one of the great Romanesque buildings in Berry for its originality and the quality of its construction.
Description
The building of monumental proportions and design has a flat end, preceded by a short straight bay, a very prominent transept, with a square surmounted by a firmly camped bell tower. But the most original part, the nave, has four bays with vaulted edges for eight corresponding bays in the side aisles. The facade is adorned with a triangular lintel carved with scenes from the Passion: Christ before Pilate, the Descent from the Cross and the Burial of Jesus. This lintel comes from the 11th-century church, reused in a Poitevin facade in the 12th century, the time when the building was rebuilt. The buildings of the adjoining priory with their geminated bays can also be observed.
