Chapelle Saint-Hubert
Behind the church hides a nugget of Loirétain's religious heritage: a modest oratory dedicated to Saint Hubert, with an admirable 17th-century painted decoration.
Description
Of very simple architecture, the building mentioned since 1271 is adjoined to the south of the unfinished choir. The present-day chapel was consecrated by the Archbishop of Sens in 1656, and was a popular place of pilgrimage until the 19th century. What makes the chapel so exceptional is its charming polychrome interior: the walls and ceiling are entirely covered with folk-inspired mural paintings, depicting the legend of Saint Hubert in the western section, while the vault features Christ in majesty and the dove of the Holy Spirit. A trompe-l?oeil architectural decor features the patron saints Apolline, Geneviève, Antoine, Emérenciène, Fiacre, Grégoire, Firmin, Catherine, Marguerite and Hubert.
