Accueil Castle of Bommiers
The ruins of the castle of Bommiers spread out over a 4-hectare park. It was the most imposing stronghold in Berry. It is now privately owned and lived in, and guided tours are available. Threatened by erosion and growing vegetation, safeguarding projects are underway.
Description
The ruins include a quadrangular courtyard, of which only an impressive curtain wall remains (early 13th century) and another courtyard of which only the boot-shaped enclosure remains. No towers flanked the curtain walls, which are almost completely in tact. A rectangular outcrop is all that remains of the northern lateral wall of a Romanesque chapel. An imposing mound was once topped with 12th-century keep, of which only the 14m base remains. It was protected by a polygonal envelope reinforced by two 13th-century towers that are still well preserved. Like most of the châteaux in Bas-Berry, Bommiers underwent major rebuilding after the Hundred Years' War, and only the layout of the original design remains. It is one of the few castles with a ditch and courtyard from the 12th/13th centuries
