Maurice Ravel, all skinny and flabby, was gen- tinely thanked when he tried to join the air force. He was a few centimetres or kilos short, and for him it was a tragedy. He couldn't let young French men go off to war with nothing to do but write pretty music on pretty paper. In one go, he writes his Trio.
Another Maurice knocks on the door – well, no, he’s not the type to wait for permission: it’s Mau- rice Joyeux, an anarchist antimilitarist from the start, his life spent campaigning for order without power and getting himself locked up.
