Gérard Lebègue uses old amateur photos. He tells “images without words”, leaving everyone free to invent their own story. He pulls out of their long argentic slumber disappeared characters to give them a leading role in a new scene born of his imagination.

From the several thousand photos in his collection, he chooses the person who will take their place in the worlds he constructs according to their look and attitude.

He cuts and recuts, amalgamates, to compose moments of unlived lives in often dreamlike atmospheres. He places himself in the tradition of nineteenth-century studio photographers
