As part of the "Autour du Surréalisme" exhibition, and on the occasion of the recent publication of the book "André Breton: Carnet de voyage chez les Indiens Hopi", the museum is pleased to welcome its authors.
A two-part presentation of the trip to New Mexico and Arizona made by the father of the Surrealist Manifesto in 1945. The Musée d'Issoudun is one of the few museums in France to preserve Hopi Kachina dolls from the American West. Little known, these sacred objects fascinated Surrealists for the inventiveness of their appearance and the richness of the myths they embodied. André Breton set out to explore them in their place of origin, in the Navajo, Zuni, Apache and Hopi Indian reserves. Handwritten notes and sketches provide a precise picture of these communities: everyday or ritual objects, secular or sacred architecture, dances, costumes, habitat, hairstyles, landscapes, fauna, flora… The authors, Marie Mauzé and Fabrice Flahutez, have contributed their criticism.
