Balade commentée de La tranchée d’Augy, site emblématique du canal de Berry

Walk and talk. The Augy trench, 5 km long, 11 m wide and 2 m deep, was built between 1830 and 1839. Forgotten, partly hidden by vegetation, the trench is one of the most beautiful landscapes on the Canal de Berry. Spanish prisoners, deserters from the Napoleonic campaigns and political prisoners carved the rock to create this waterway. Housed in camps built nearby, some 800 people carved this artery into the ground. Many died on the site due to accidents, dysentery, epidemics…
