A true cultural and landscape heritage, low walls built with local materials and dry-laid (or with little lime mortar for the top section) can, depending on their typology and configuration, shelter certain species of fauna, fungi and flora, or even encourage their development. Insects, reptiles, spiders, lichens, mosses and vascular plants all thrive, take refuge and even reproduce there. The interstices left in these low walls offer a specific habitat that can be likened to a natural biotope, where management will influence the evolutionary dynamics of the vegetation that may colonize the structure. In some cases, these elevations create a substrate in the landscape, hosting a whole range of biodiversity.
